HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to create selected thermal effects within tissue, supporting a gradual healing and collagen-remodelling response for suitable adults.
HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to create selected thermal effects within tissue, supporting a gradual healing and collagen-remodelling response for suitable adults.
01 / How it works
Focused ultrasound uses acoustic energy to create discrete zones of controlled thermal injury (coagulation) within selected tissue depths. This triggers a natural wound-healing response intended to support gradual collagen remodelling. However, important differences exist. Microfocused ultrasound (MFU) generally uses smaller thermal coagulation zones. MFU-V (such as the specific Ultherapy® brand) includes integrated real-time DeepSEE ultrasound imaging, allowing trained operators to view dermal and subdermal tissue for treatment planning. Generic HIFU does not automatically include this visualisation.

Who may benefit
HIFU is not suitable for everyone. A careful doctor-led assessment determines if your concern involves mild-to-moderate skin laxity, or if it relates to facial volume loss, bone structure, or heavy submental fat deposits.

Yes. Medi Clinic can assess Singapore visitors, but device availability, MDA registration, designated-device permits, and practitioner scope must be strictly confirmed first.
If a verified medical device is recommended and patient suitability is confirmed, treatment proceeds at high clinical standards. The exact device intended purpose, cartridge authenticity, and tracking logs must be transparently addressed. Do not buy “unlimited shot” packages from unverified sources.
Gradual & Temporary Results: HIFU does not produce a dramatic, permanent surgical facelift. It aims for modest, subtle contour change as the tissue heals and remodels over weeks to months. Result duration varies based on the device, natural ageing, weight changes, and skin laxity. Repeat sessions should only be based on medical review, not automatic monthly subscriptions. We refer patients requiring substantial tissue repositioning for surgical consultation.
While non-invasive, focused ultrasound intentionally creates a thermal biological effect. Common temporary reactions may include discomfort, pain, redness, swelling, bruising, welting, tingling, or numbness that usually resolves.
However, serious complications are possible. These include surface burns, blisters, persistent nerve numbness, temporary muscle weakness (such as smile asymmetry), unexpected facial hollowing, pigmentation changes, and scarring. Urgent medical assessment is required if you experience sudden visual changes, severe escalating pain, blistering, new facial weakness, or difficulty speaking. Avoid rubbing or pressing painful areas unless advised by our doctor, protect irritated skin from excessive sun exposure, and follow all written clinic aftercare.

06 / Before you decide
Each treatment has its own considerations. Your consultation is the place to discuss expected benefits, possible side effects, alternatives and anything that may affect timing.

No. Ultherapy is a specific microfocused-ultrasound system (MFU-V) with integrated visualisation. Generic HIFU devices should not be called Ultherapy.
No. Imaging capability depends entirely on the exact device brand and model. Many HIFU devices fire blindly without real-time ultrasound feedback.
It may provide selected modest tightening for mild-to-moderate laxity but does not reproduce surgical tissue repositioning or remove substantial loose skin.
