BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. Change the classification setting to compare Malaysia / Asian adult thresholds with international adult thresholds. The same BMI can therefore have a different category.
The normal reference interval is 18.5 to below 23 for the Malaysia setting, and 18.5 to below 25 for the international setting. The weight interval shown is calculated from that range and your entered height. It is not a prescribed weight-loss target.
BMI does not measure body fat, muscle mass or waist distribution. A value inside the reference range does not establish overall health. Children, pregnancy and highly muscular body types need a different or additional assessment.
FAQ
Why are there two classification settings?
The Malaysia / Asian adult setting uses lower overweight and obesity thresholds. The international setting uses different cut-offs. Choose the setting appropriate to the consultation; the height-and-weight formula stays the same.
Does a normal BMI mean I am healthy?
It means the BMI falls inside the selected reference interval. Blood pressure, waist measurements, metabolic factors, history and clinical assessment can still matter.
Is the displayed weight range my treatment target?
No. It is a mathematical reference interval for your entered height. A clinician should individualise any treatment goal.
Can I use this for children or pregnancy?
This tool classifies adults aged 18 or over. It does not apply adult categories during pregnancy. Children require age- and sex-specific assessment.
